German Language
German ranks as the 11th most spoken language in the world, with approximately 90 million native speakers. Within Europe, however, it takes the lead as the most widely spoken mother tongue, surpassing Italian, French, Spanish, and even English. Roughly 16% of the European population speaks German as their first language.
French holds official status in 29 countries, including France, Belgium, Canada, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Congo, Mali, and Senegal, and is spoken across every continent. It is the fourth most commonly spoken native language in the European Union. The number of French speakers is projected to rise to 700 million by 2050, with a significant share of growth coming from Africa.
Spanish is spoken by over 500 million people worldwide, making it the second most spoken language after Mandarin Chinese. Its popularity is rapidly increasing, and by 2050, the number of Spanish speakers is expected to reach 600 million. Spanish is also the second most studied language globally—in 2015, more than 21 million people were learning it as a second language. Within three generations, it’s estimated that 10% of the global population will be able to communicate in Spanish.
